Caregiving Tasks – What’s on Your List?
After my mother was found wandering in a Sears store, I moved her to Minnesota so she could be close to family. I found a senior living apartment for her near my home. Having my mother close by was comforting, but it also made me an “on call” caregiver. What do caregivers do?
Vicki L. Schmall and Ruth E. Stiehl list some of the tasks in their booklet, “Coping with Caregiving: How to Manage Stress When Caring for Older Relatives.” According to the authors, the tasks include shopping, making phone calls, managing financial affairs, arranging for health care, and more.
A US Government Website, Womens Health, says caregiving also includes cleaning, cooking, bathing, dressing, paying bills, and giving medicine. And an article, “Sharing the Care: A New Model for Family Caregiving,” posted on the Caregiver Helper Website, divides caregiving into six categories: assessment, organization, planning, communication, scheduling and monitoring.
These categories help you see the big caregiving picture.
But each category has built-in problems that you must solve. You may be a caregiver for a few months or many years. Some caregivers are on the job for decades. The longer you are a caregiver, the more your tasks change.
Tasks increase with time. Your caregiving may have started out simply, like taking your parent grocery shopping. Before you know it, caregiving includes dozens of tasks. I was surprised at some of the tasks I added to my list. Though I paid to have my mother’s laundry done, I kept finding dirty clothes. I took them home, washed them, sewed on buttons, and re-stitched hems. Suddenly, mending was on my To Do list.
Tasks change with health.
Many elderly people have a variety of health problems and they increase your caregiving tasks. My mother developed late onset diabetes. With help from the pharmacist, I was able to get free insulin shots for her. Agnosia — the failure to recognize things — was really hard to handle. When my mother didn’t recognize me I was devastated.
Tasks eat up personal time. I had a regular schedule for my mother. This schedule gave her something to do almost every day. For example, I took her out to lunch every Wednesday. Years passed, and my mother’s schedule became my schedule. I had little time for myself or my family. Thank goodness I married an understanding man.
Tasks can cost money. My mother had been defrauded of $ 50,000 and her money was almost gone, so we began to pay for things. We didn’t know how much money we spent on my mother and didn’t want to know. However, we knew we were spending enough to include caregiving in our budget.
Tasks sap your energy. Nine years of caregiving is a long time. I didn’t know how exhausted I was until my mother died. It took me a year to regain my energy. Your energy may be so depleted that you wonder if you can continue as a caregiver.
Nobody can prepare you completely for caregiving. Still, you may help yourself by making a list of your tasks. Keep the list for at least two weeks. Put a check by the tasks you need help with and find that help. Then write this pledge at the top of your list: I promise to take care of me.

Recognizing The Need For Caregivers For Seniors
Family caregivers often don’t recognize when they are in over their heads, and often get to a breaking point. Heavy emotional, health and financial stress, indirectly-related relationship problems and loss of time are just a few of many issues that can surface when caring for a loved one. After a prolonged period of time, care-giving can become too difficult to endure any longer. In the short-term, the family caregiver may be inclined to believe that they can handle it. But in the long-term, it may become apparent that professional outside help, through caregivers for seniors, may be needed. A typical pattern with an overloaded caregiver may unfold as follows:
1 to 18 months – The family caregiver is confident, has everything under control and is coping well. Other friends and family are lending support.
20 to 36 months – The family caregiver is taking medication to sleep and control mood swings.
Outside help dwindles away and, except for trips to the store or doctor, the caregiver has severed most social contacts. The caregiver feels alone and helpless. This is a very sad time.
38 to 50 months – Besides needing tranquilizers or antidepressants, the family caregiver’s physical health is beginning to deteriorate. Lack of focus and sheer fatigue cloud judgment and the caregiver is often unable to make rational decisions or ask for help.
It is often at this stage that family or friends intercede and find other solutions for care. This may include respite caregivers, hiring a home nursing agency, or home health aides, or placing the loved one in a nursing facility. Without intervention, the caregiver may become a candidate for long term care as well.
It is also important to use outside professional help in a caregiver setting. A financial planner, care funding specialist or a reverse mortgage specialist may find the funds to pay for professional help to keep a loved one at home. A care manager can guide the family and the caregiver through the maze of long-term care issues. The care manager has been there many times the family is experiencing it for the first time.
An elder law attorney can help iron out legal problems. And an elder mediator can help solve disputes between family members. Having competent advice can often make the difference between allowing a loved one to remain in the home or being forced to seek out government welfare assistance. Due to pride or sheer determination some caregivers allow the situation to go beyond their control. They have gotten to a point where depression and fatigue have clouded their judgment. At some point the caregiver will have to admit that he or she can’t handle it alone and a better solution must be found.
Bob Fischer advises caregivers for seniors and provides substantive and resourceful guidance to those in need of respite caregivers.

A Brief History of Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine represents our earliest attempt at healing ourselves, and indeed even some animals seek out certain types of plant when they have been injured or are sick. Elk were observed by Native Americans to seek out Echinacea plants when they were sick, which led to them calling the plants ‘Elk Root’; other wild animals have been seen to chew willow bark when in distress (we now know that willow bark contains salicylic acid, or Aspirin as it is known when synthesised) and monkeys and primates often seek out certain fruits and roots when they are sick.
Presumably our ancestors would have self-medicated in just this way, no doubt a long time before they evolved the power of speech. Estimates as to the precise time when Homo sapiens arose vary from around 100,000 years ago at the most conservative to up to 600,000 years ago at the most generous (paleoanthropology is a very competitive science, and every researcher would like their earliest dated humanoid bone fragments to be confirmed as human rather than ‘proto-human’, but that is another article in itself!) but what is undoubted is that our ancestors were African.
However long ago H.
sapiens originally arose, we began to spread out from Africa by around 100,000 years ago, displacing and eventually driving to extinction other hominids (our cousins) such as H. erectus and (later) H. neanderthalensis. By 60,000 years ago we had reached what is now Australia, and the northernmost tip of America was colonised by around 20,000 years ago. Amazingly, it took just 1000 years or so for humans to spread from what is now Alaska to the tip of South America, and when one considers the range of climates and geographical conditions that exist in the Americas, one can but marvel at the resourcefulness and adaptability of our species.
By around 1000 years ago, even the most remote inhabitable Pacific Islands had been colonised.
The reader may be forgiven at this point for wondering what this fly-by tour of human prehistory has to do with herbalism, but the point is a simple one. In every environment that humans have made a home, they have quickly discovered all food crop plants, and all medicinal plants. Every culture, in every climate (we must here exempt cultures such as the Inuit and Tartars of northern Siberia, for whom plants formed little part of their diet) has invented their own form of herbalism.
Herbalism in most cultures takes two forms – medicine and ritualism. Some plants are to be eaten when you are sick, and some are to be used for shamanic rituals and other religious practices.
In the West, herbal remedies began to lose popularity during the enlightenment, and with the beginnings of modern medicine at the end of the 17th century, it might have seemed as though the decline of herbalism was inevitable. Today though, even though we have the most advanced synthetic drugs and medical practices we have ever had, many researchers are looking to herbs and their extracts as possible ways to treat some of our most deadly diseases. Even as I write, labs around the world are testing plants and synthesising analogues of their extracts for trials against cancers and incurable viral infections such as HIV.
We no longer have need for the ritualism and faith healing of shamans, but our ancestors have one piece of advice for us that shines undimmed through the millennia – know your herbs and make use of the plants in your environment, as they may one day save your life. And yet we continue to grub up an area of rainforest the size of Kentucky every year, destroying for ever countless species of plants as yet unknown to Western science.
In conclusion, despite all our advances and all our knowledge, we may yet have reason to rely upon herbs and their extracts, and we destroy them at our peril.

Preschool Caregivers Are Mandated Reporters
Although preschools are place for learning and loving, some difficult situations arise from time to time. One of the hardest things to deal with is child abuse or neglect. As a preschool director, I thought I would take some time to discuss how child abuse or neglect is dealt with in a preschool.
Caregivers Are Mandated Reporters
In Washoe County, there is a policy in place that states that we, as caregivers, are mandated to report child abuse. At our preschool we are all about loving and nurturing your children and hope that you are too. Every day we are on the lookout for signs of abuse. If we spot something that could be abuse, we will usually take a note and contact the parent. Accidents happen and it is our job to make sure the parent is aware of the child’s problem. Please remember that it is not our job to pass judgment. Our job is to care for children and make sure they are well cared for both in the center and outside of the center.
The Usual Signs Of Child Abuse
There are certain signs of abuse that are more obvious than others are. The ones that stand out the most are bruises, cuts or other signs of physical injuries. Sometimes these injuries are not visible, but can be noticed when picking a child up. For instance, if a caregiver was to pick up a child and the child started crying we would examine the child. Sometimes, they may have internal injuries or injuries that are not in plain sight. Caregivers will also take note of a child’s behavior. If Johnny is usually a cheerful, playful child, but then one day he starts to become withdrawn, overly sad, or angry, and this behavior seems to be happening more frequently, then something may be wrong. As caregivers, we would make notes of the changes and discuss our concerns with the parents. Since we are mandated reporters, if we feel that something may be wrong, it would be necessary to notify Social Services.
How Is Child Neglect Different?
More than anything, when we think about child abuse we think about physical abuse. Child neglect is a little different, but is still a form of child abuse. Child neglect includes inadequate diet, continuously dirty clothes or hair, or the use of inappropriate language. If we spot any signs of child neglect, we will treat it as if we spot signs of abuse.
We Take Notes
Preschool caregivers will often take notes of injuries, neglect or behavior patterns. If anybody’s bottle is continuously dirty or gunky, we will take note of what we say and what actions were taken. By having notes, it makes it easier to spot negative trends.
Hard But Necessary
Spotting and reporting child abuse can be difficult, but is necessary. Our main concern as preschool teachers is the health and safety of each child who comes into the center. We make sure that we handle each case in a professional manner. If your child is injured it is best to inform the preschool, so that they know why the child is bruised or has something broken. As a preschool director, I want to let you know that we are here to work with you.

Is Herbal Medicine Still Relevant Today?
Herbalism is defined as ‘a traditional medicinal or folk medicine practice based on the use of plants and plant extracts’. Since prehistoric times and until relatively recently, people in almost every culture and corner of the world had an intimate relationship with the plants that grew in their region, knowing which were good to eat, which were poisonous, and which could be used to treat illnesses.
The origins of herbalism and herbal medicine lie deep within our ancestral past and have more to do with mysticism, ritual and magic as with our health and wellbeing. Many plants and fungi have quite powerful psychoactive properties, and hallucinogenic plants and mushrooms have been used by many cultures for religious ceremonies and healing rituals.
As thorough and impressive as folk knowledge of plants and their uses for healing and other reasons was (and in a few now very rare cases such as some tribes in Papua New Guinea, is) we must remember how little they really knew and understood about human anatomy, pathology and diseases in general.
Indeed, we must remember that medicine is a very recent science.
For example, as late as the 1850s, it was believed by all medical authorities that diseases such as cholera and typhoid were spread by ‘miasmas’ – in other words unhealthy airs. A London physician called John Snow discovered the truth (that water contaminated with sewage was to blame) with a brilliant piece of detective work. He noticed that all the cases in a cholera outbreak occurred around one well in Soho. When he took the well out of commission, the epidemic cleared up. It was found that a leak had contaminated the well with sewage.
These days of course we not only have a thorough understanding of human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, an almost complete understanding of pathology thanks to the germ-theory of disease and surgical procedures and techniques of breathtaking ingenuity, we also have an incredibly advanced chemistry that allows us to synthesise potential medicines.
Despite all that we can do, and the exciting potential of new research, it seems that our most simple and primitive attempts at medicine still have something to offer us. Our knowledge of botany and plant chemistry allows us to accurately examine the claims that herbalists have been making for centuries, and even allows us to isolate and examine specific plant compounds for research in new areas.
The scope and efficiency of modern medicine means that – at least in the West – herbal remedies are used for the most part as dietary supplements. Few people now would rely solely on plants when they were ill; the main purpose of herbal medicine is to keep one’s body and mind in good shape, largely to avoid illnesses and reduce their symptoms when they arise.
Of course many common ailments can be treated just as effectively, and in some cases more effectively, with herbal remedies as with synthesised medicines, but what is truly exciting is the scope for new research into plants and their medicinal applications. Plants have been quietly evolving for hundreds of millions of years and have produced a truly astounding array of chemicals, to build their stems leaves and flowers, to defend themselves from being eaten and more. Our ability to identify potentially medicinally useful chemicals, test them against diseases and then synthesise them in bulk offers us great potential in the fight against currently incurable diseases, and for this reason herbs are as important to our health now as they ever were.

Chinese Herbal Medicine. Is It For You?
There are Chinese herbal medicine clinics that offer herbal medicinal treatments popping up everywhere. Chinese herbal medicines are said to be used for treatment of many ailments and perhaps if you are having no luck with traditional medicine options you should be taking a look at what Chinese herbal medicine may be able to do to help you.
Chinese medical experts believe that the human body is a universe on its own and all components are interconnected which gives a sense of harmony. In this respect when treatments are considered the entire body is divided into specific areas and the treatments for each area will vary.
Chinese people as a rule believe that diseases and illnesses result form the incorrect function of the individual areas of your body in that your body is not working in harmony with itself. They also believe that if attention is not given to each area as required then the health of the individual will only continue to deteriorate.
The more traditional Chinese medical experts are convinced that there are healing and curing properties to be derived from animals and plants and that these healing properties can directly effect the divisions of the body in their own ways. There are many healing options available for various different types of illness and pinpointing the problem areas is the first part of the process.
It is thought that emphysema can even be treated by Chinese herbal therapy. In all cases relating to Chinese herbal medicines you need to look at your diet and lifestyle. There are certain things for almost all natural remedies that you should avoid however there are specific items that are usually considered a no go zone for Chinese herbal medicines and many items that you should be concentrating on including in your daily routines. Such as:
Never miss a meal you should eat small meals throughout the day. Some of the recommended food options are fish, lean meat, eggs for protein, seeds, nuts, fiber-rich vegetables and soy. Use of brewer is yeast to stabilize blood sugar levels is an important remedy in Chinese herbal medicine.
Pancreatin and proteolytic enzymes provide assistance with digestion, Glutamine reduces the cravings you feel for sugar and Zinc helps with the release of insulin to the body. Drinking herbal teas that contain dandelion or licorice are also believed to stabilize blood sugar levels.
Things you should avoid, which you will find very common in a lot of natural medicines and in the traditional nutritional suggestions are things such as nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, sugar to name but a few.
Most importantly you want to seek the assistance from a Chinese Medicinal Herbalist to find out what are the right sources of food and liquid products as well as supplements that will do the best for your system. You need to explain your current ales or illness to the herbalist and they should also be able to tell a lot by a personal visit and give you tips for what things you should be doing.
If you are advised of certain remedies and you are taking these items for an extended period and see no results then it may be that you have found a crank! If this does happen to you do not give up the first time around. When you visit a traditional doctor you go back when the medicine does not work so it is recommended with Chinese herbal medicine that not only should you try again but try someone else to ensure you get the full chance to reap the benefits.
Make sure to give the remedies a try though there are many people reporting various benefits when seeking Chinese Herbal medicine remedies and you may find that this is just want you need. Especially if you have tried traditional methods and the results are not forthcoming.

Natural Herbal Oils and Medicine
Using Natural Herbal Oils, also referred to as Essential Oils and Natural Herbal Medicine, as a safe and natural alternative to conventional medicine.
Being made from 100% natural ingredients, usually plant extracts, make herbal remedies very safe to use. The use of oils is not restricted to medicinal use. Physical and mental performances can be improved with the use of herbal products without any side effects.Weight loss being another popular use for herbal medicine today. Herbal and essential oils are also used as massage oils, inhalants (a few drops in oil burners), and in baths (just a few drops are all that is necessary). Oils are usually supplied in small bottles. The main reason being just a couple of drops per application are needed. This makes the use of herbal oils as a much more cost effective solution compared to a lot of the synthetic medicines.
There would be way too many natural herbal oils to list here, because of their wide variety of uses.
If you do not have access to a nearby health shop, there are many reputable suppliers on the internet. As with all internet businesses do you research first.
Many people today are turning to alternative natural remedies as an alternative to common synthetic medications prescribed by doctors. Doctors too are supplementing prescribed medication with herbal remedies. I would like to point out, if you are looking to use natural herbal oils or natural herbal medicine as an alternative, extreme care should be taken to the type and dosage. Although most herbs are very safe to use, you do need to consult a herbalist, naturopath or doctor as to the types and dosage. Do as much research as you can.
